Yesterday
I heard the cardinal sing a song of spring.
Today
I saw the cardinal sit-
Fluffy and forlorn.
Speechless he admires my piles of snow.
I tell him that I miss his song,
that he so sweetly sang.
He puffs himself up, with an air of self-confidence. He tells me he will sing again tomorrow. With that a large snow flake lands land on his beak- he ruffles his feathers in dismay. I have seen him waver - just for a moment. Raising his head in affected indifference he prepares for flight. Over his wing he says maybe not tomorrow.
