Growing
up near Buffalo, NY, there was a drawer behind
As
a family with six children we went through a lot of paper.
I
can still hear mom reminding dad (an offset printer)
that
we could use more paper. At age 12 I received my
first
126 Kodak Instamatic camera. I was in sixth grade. Stealthily, I
would find subjects I desired to draw. Writing, drawing and
photography co-existed until my early 20's.
In
college at Alfred University, I truly enjoyed drawing and writing,
but felt the greatest connection with photography.
For
the most part doors, stairs and windows were among my favorite
subjects. In the beginning I found photographing people daunting, but
I did capture some great images of people unaware. My love of
photographing people was found through photographing my children and
family members and eventually moved beyond worke. For over 25 years I
have enjoyed my work in the wedding and portrait fields. I have been
blessed to work with clients world wide.
Besides
working as a photographer, I have two grown children who are creative
and witty. I am a serious lover of dogs-I only care for one at a
time, but deeply admire those that can care for more. The outdoors
recharges my soul and our garden was featured in 2013 on the NRV
Garden Tour. As a full blown hoarder of fabric, I create quilts,
bowls and wall hangings. I am also blessed with one patient and
sometimes puzzled husband who travels a lot.
I
have lived in Blacksburg since 1982. My focus of creating a home and
raising children took precedent over other creative endeavors. In
November 2012 I joined the Blacksburg Regional Art Association in an
effort to give myself insight into just how artists “worked”. I
am now Co-VP and love the supportive group of people I have found.
About
these Images:
This
is my first foray into displaying my images in a public venue. I am
delighted to be a part of the BRAA which promotes artists to do just
this type of thing. The collection of images you see here is the
culmination of the need to finish what I began in 1979. I have over
2000 door related images. The 20 photos you see here were taken since
2006 in digital format. I hope to delve into my archives in the next
year and print some of my earlier images.
Why
doors? The word transition comes to mind. The symbolism of doors as
a visual transition from inside to outside or vice versa is basic;
but obviously quite captivating for me.

the images, prices are next to each photo. Feel free to contact me at

Wow, lovely collection of doors. The way you made them into a collage makes each and every door look more attractive. I like to see and photograph doors with various different design, but somehow I haven’t come up with the idea how to present them to attract readers attention. An appealing door stimulates my imagination where it leads to and what the inside is like. Maybe I could be warped into another world. With best wishes to your 2014.

Thank you Yoko! I look forward to some of your inspired doors. When I visited Japan in 2007 I remember there were many wonderful doors. Happy New Year to you as well!!
DeleteWhat a great collection of these TRANSITIONAL places. I too am drawn to doors, but 20,000.... no way. So excited for you to have these on display, and loved the autobiographical information here!
ReplyDeleteHey Jeanne- 20,000 would be a lot!! I believe it is closer to 2,000 maybe 3,000. Maybe someday 20,000. I hope you are well.
DeleteWhat a beautiful exhibit! I love doors and windows and these are fabulous! If I lived near you I'd come have a look in person:).....you look pretty too:) Good luck with your showing. Happy 2014 to you and yours.....take care,,,
ReplyDeleteHey Cynnie!! Thanks for stopping by. My blogging has become quite sparse. But I am still loving photography. It felt really good to have this show. It has been well received. Blessings to you in 2014. xo
DeleteYou are definitely venturing through doorways, Teri! Wish I could see your exhibit in person. I'm partial to steps. I have so many photos of them that my kids are someday going to question my sanity if they ever go thorough my archives.
ReplyDeleteBarb- venturing and pushing through. I have a collection of steps too! My kids know better than to question- and when we are dead it will make for a good story. Hope you and yours are well!!
DeleteWhen my daughter was in college she had a poster of "The Doors of Sage" and we had it framed for her after she graduated - it's a collection of the doors that could be found on campus. Due to building and renovations not all the doors are still there, so the poster has special meaning years later. I think photos of doors signify optimism about what's next, what can be, even if we don't know what that is. I would enjoy your show if I could get there from here:)
ReplyDeleteSharon- we have both been on a walk through many transitions. These doors made it fun to think about that in a fun way. Stay well my dear.
DeleteVery nice collection of colourful doors, Teri!
ReplyDeleteI think it's the dream of every ambitious amateur photographer to display his or her work in a public venue. I'm curious when this will happen to me... ;-)
Regards from Germany, Uwe.
Thank you YWB. When it does you will be ready- take the chance even if you don't feel ready. Thanks for stopping by!

ReplyDeletewonderful photos, Teri! Congratulations on your show; I wish I could see it in person. Doors are such a significant symbol of so many things- expectation, tranistion, tranformation, change- they're one of my favorite subjects as well. xo
Sharmon thanks so much. That means a lot coming from you. I love your work. :-)
